‘Peace of mind’
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).
There are several advantages of solar power for emergency preparedness. Power outages are common following many storms, emergencies, and disasters.
Additional solar advantages include; being able to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle, resolving energy and fuel concerns, also money saving benefits.
Fossil fuels must be located, excavated, and transported before they can be used. These processes are invasive and detrimental to the land through side effects such as erosion and ecological and geologic instability. Then the deposit or well is depleted. On the other hand, energy from the sun is infinite and free. It can be harnessed and turned into power anywhere a solar panel can be mounted.
Fossil fuels must be burned to produce electricity. Burning them creates unwanted byproducts that can create air and water pollution and release huge amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. When in use, solar panel produce power without waste or emissions, and do so through a natural process called photovoltaics.
Whether you buy a system and pay it back with electricity savings or you pay a low, fixed rate for your power through a solar power purchase agreement (PPA), you’ll come to a point where your solar panels will have paid for themselves. After the panels pay for themselves, you are saving a lot of money, because utility rates climb regularly each year.
Fossil fuel deposits are scattered and finite. Their economic worth and uncertainty are enough to cause disagreements that can lead to labor strikes, price fluctuation, and even war. Solar energy is available nearly everywhere, and will be for a very long time.
LONG TIME BENEFIT
Solar power systems have financial benefits that materialize over time. There are initial start-up and set-up costs of a home solar power system. But it’s worth looking at the upfront expenditure as an investment, as there are many ongoing benefits for owners that make up for the initial cost.
The first is obvious: as you create your own energy, you use less from the grid and you save on your power bills. The second is that when your panels generate more electricity than your household requires, the excess electricity can be sold back to the grid (depending on schemes in different States or Territories).
An argument could be made for solar panels as a way of protecting your household against future price increases of electricity produced by more traditional energy sources (coal, oil, and gas). As a provider of your own electricity from a renewable source, you can reduce your household’s dependence on fossil fuels and energy providers.
In the long term, solar panels can be a real estate selling point and potentially add market value to your home.
Solar electricity panels capture the Sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that we can use in the home to power our appliances. The panels, comprised of (PV) cells, are usually mounted onto a home’s roof and oriented in a way that maximizes their exposure to the Sun’s light. When the sunlight hits them, they generate electricity. An inverter is used to convert the energy into AC electricity that you can use in your home.
There are two types of storage methods that home owners can access when it comes to storing solar energy. For solar electricity, it is stored using either batteries or the grid. For solar heating, it is stored using thermal mass, water tanks, or swimming pool water.
The use of personal electronic devices in the outdoors continues to grow, creating demand for portable power solutions to recharge these devices. Portable solar panels have become the preferred power source.
The method to getting the solar power, storing it, and using it, is called ‘The Power Supply Chain’. By understanding the basic components of the power supply chain, you are well on your way to finding the right technology for your needs.
To put it simply, you use or recharge your electronic device using power stored in a portable battery, which was received from an initial power source.
- Power source – energy source to charge the battery pack
- Power storage – A portable battery pack to store energy
- Power use – electronic device using stored energy
The most common power sources (from fastest to slowest):
- AC power (wall outlet)
- 12V DC (car charger)
- Solar panel
- Kinetic motion
- Hydrogen fuel cell
There are two types of storage batteries:
- The Integrated Storage Battery offers all-in-one convenience of a power generator to create power and a batter to store it, for later recharging use
- The Independent Storage Battery offers the flexibility to leave the generator (e.g., solar panel) at home or at base camp, and take only the battery
If you are buying a solar panel that comes with a storage battery, pay attention to the battery specs (like storage capacity).
How do you find the voltage input rating for your electronic device? First of all, you can look in the owners’ manual under technical specs. Look for the voltage rating printed as ‘DC output’ on the wall outlet charger that you received with your electronic device. Then make sure your portable batter pack can deliver at least the same voltage.
Federal, state, and local governments offer great solar energy tax credits and rebates to encourage homeowners to switch to renewable energy to lower their energy usage and switch to solar power. Some are generous enough to cover up to 30% of your solar power system cost.
For example, the federal government allows you to deduct 30% of your solar power system costs off you federal taxes through an investment tax credit (ITC).
These incentives can dramatically lower the cost of a solar panel system or energy efficiency project.
RENEWABLE & CLEAN
Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in four distinct areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling, motor fuels, and rural (off-grid) energy services.
Solar power does not pollute the earth the way other energy sources do and it is silent. Fossil fuel sources are one of the main causes of pollution and global warming but solar power does not harm the environment at all. Mining and burning fossil fuels are also noisy and smelly, but deriving power from the sun causes none of these concerns.
Unlike other energy sources, solar cells that produce solar power require very little maintenance. They do not have any moving parts and last a very long time, sometimes 30 years or more, without routine maintenance like other energy sources. This makes them economical because although solar cells can cost a lot upfront you will save big over time because they last for so long.
Preparing to be more self-sufficient and learning how to live off the land, are both rapidly gaining recognition and popularity, and for good reason.
